After over a year of being closed to the public, the Northern Lights Palace Pool in Melfort will be reopening to the public.
The pool shut its doors back in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic hit Saskatchewan and businesses started to close.
While the pool was closed over the last 13 months, work has been done on the pool area. Work that likely would’ve had to take place during a normal summer shutdown, which will not happen now.
Monday, May 3 will be opening day for the pool and things will be a bit different this time around as COVID-19 restrictions are in place. The City of Melfort’s director of development, planning, and community Brent Lutz said there will be a limited number of swimmers per time slot.
“Patrons are going to be required to pre-register,” he said. “And registrations can be made online at www.melfort.ca.”
Residents can also call the pool to register for swim times.
Bookings for the week will open on Friday for swim times beginning on the Monday. Lutz said patrons are also asked to book just one time, and then wait 72 hours before booking another.
There will also be a progressive opening for the pool with some programming slowly beginning.
“For the first week, we will be offering aquafit and lane swimming,” Lutz said. “And there will be one session of family swimming on Saturday.”
Lutz said the progressive opening allows staff to adjust to the new COVID-19 restrictions.
Swimmers will need to enter through the south doors of the building and go through screening, doors will open 15 minutes before the swim time, and patrons are asked to be out of the facility within 15 minutes of the swim time ending, and masks are mandatory when not in the water.
