Backstage in Melfort is announcing the construction of an all-new location in the city.
The 17,000 square foot location will be constructed at the Melfort Stonegate Shopping Centre adjacent to Saskatchewan Drive south off Highway 6.
Manager Nils Sorensen told northeastNOW after 40 years of business, it was time for the next evolution of Backstage.
“Categories that we have been expanding such as appliances, furniture, outdoor recreation stuff, we will take a new approach to that,” Sorensen said. “We will have a lot more stock and selection for the northeast to come and see in-person.”
As the needs of the community continue to grow, the owners and staff at Backstage recognize the importance of growing with them resulting in the decision to construct the new, bigger building.
The COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for the world of retail according to Sorensen, but has also been an example of how to improve business models and operations.
“There’s been major shortages across the industry because of increased shipping issues as well as lack of manufacturing overseas,” Sorensen said. “We have been seeing customers waiting longer than normal and that is happening across the world.”
With the new store, there will be more space for more stock and more availability for different models.
“If you want one of the flagship televisions from Samsung, Sony, or LG for example, you’re going to be able to walk into Backstage and actually see them, touch them and play around with them,” Sorensen said. “We want to eliminate those trips into the city to do that.”
Sorensen said everything will be laid out better than it is at their current location in the Melfort Mall where they are spread across three locations.
“Bringing everything together on one sales floor is really going to help make the shopping experience a lot better,” Sorensen said.
Construction is set to begin later this year with a target opening date of fall 2022.
