The Town of Nipawin continues to see the most crime among all major communities in the northeast.
According to Statistics Canada, which released its Crime Severity Index for 2022, the community saw over 1,700 incidents last year. This represents an average of 17,032 incidents per 100,000 people, by far the most in the region.
Despite this, Nipawin’s rate actually saw a five per cent decrease from 2021. It was the only major northeast community to see a drop.
The City of Melfort saw the biggest yearly increase as its rate rose by over 21 per cent.
On average, there were 15,066 incidents per 100,000 people. This is the highest the city has seen since 2006 and the third-highest rate over the past 25 years.
There were a total of 913 incidents in 2022. This is the first time it has peaked over 900 in the past 25 years.
The Town of Tisdale also saw its rate peak over 10,000 incidents per 100,000. Overall, the rate rose by roughly six per cent, a year after seeing a 13 per cent decrease.
In total, there were 570 incidents last year.
As for Humboldt, the city saw a 13 per cent in its rate in 2022.
There were a total of 443 incidents which represents 7,330 incidents per 100,000 people. That is the highest it’s been since 2015.
